STANDARD EN 13 832-3: Requirements for boots highly resistant to chemicals under laboratory conditions.

This document is not an official reproduction of the standard; refer to the standards issued by AFNOR www.afnor.fr

Standard EN 13 832-1 defines the test methods for the boots.

Shoes must be class II, i.e. they must be made entirely of rubber or polymer.

The boots highly resistant to chemicals may or may not include a safety toe-cap and consequently meet the requirements of standards EN ISO 20345 or EN ISO 20347

TESTS OF RESISTANCE TO CHEMICALS:

Resistance to degradation:

The samples are placed in contact with the chemical for 23 hours.  The tests are performed with at least 3 chemicals chosen from the following table:

CodeletterChemicalCAS-NRClass
1 B Acetone 78-93-3 Ketone
2 D Dichloromethane 75-09-2 Chlorinated hydrocarbon
3 F Toluene 108-88-3 Aromatic hydrocarbon
4 G Diethylamine 109-89-7 Amine
5 H Tetrahydrofurane 109-99-9 Heterocyclic Ether
6 I Ethyl acetate 141-78-6 Ester
7 J n-heptane 142-85-5 Saturated Hydrocarbon
8 K Sodium hydroxide solution 30 % d = 1.33 1310-73-2 Solution alcaline
9 L Sulphuric acid 95 % d = 1.84 7664-93-9 Inorganic acid
10 M Nitric acid (65 ± 3) % 7697-37-2 Inorganic acid
11 N Acetic acid (99 ± 1) % 64-19-7 Organic acid
12 O Ammonia solution (25 ± 1) % 1336-21-6 Alkaline solution
13 P Hydrogen peroxide (30 ± 1) % V/V 124-43-6 Peroxide
14 Q Isopropanol 67-63-0 Aliphatic alcohol
15 R Sodium hypochlorite (13 ± 1) % (de chlorure actif) 7681-52-9 Hypochlorite

After chemical degradation of the samples, the results of the mechanical tests must comply with the following requirements:

 SoleUpper
Tests Tear resistanceEN ISO20344:2004, 8.2 Hardness ENISO 868 Tear resistanceENISO20344:2004, 8.2  Elongation at beakENISO20344:2004, 6.4
Requirements Greater or equal to6.4 kN/m  Minimum :30 shore A

Maximum: (valuebefore deterioration+ 10) shoreA

Greater or equal to6.4 kN/m Minimum:80 % of the value before deterioration

Permeation resistance:

The permeation tests are performed with the same chemicals as for the degradation tests.

The minimum requirement is level 1

The five performance levels are defined as follows:

  • level  1: permeation occurs between 121 mins and 240 mins
  • level  2: permeation occurs between 241 mins and 480 mins
  • level  3: permeation occurs between 481 mins and 1440 mins
  • level  4: permeation occurs between 1441 mins and 1920 mins
  • level  5: no permeation after 1921 mins.

Marking: The following symbols are stamped on the boot

Example of marking: EN 13832-3 2006 B-M-Q

Means that the toe-cap is resistant to a shock of 200 joules and meets the requirements of standard EN ISO 20345, and that the boot is highly resistant to acetone, nitric acid and Isopropanol.
